Mik Bakker is a young, talented furniture designer and sculptor based in Amsterdam. She grew up in a multicultural and artistic environment, with both a Dutch and Peruvian nationality. Her journey into the world of design and architecture began at the Design Academy in Eindhoven and ArtEZ, where she discovered her particular fascination for materials and shapes. She graduated from the Royal Art Academy in The Hague in 2022, specialising in Furniture Design.
Bold, functional statements in space define the work of Dutch Designer Mik Bakker. With a distinct spatial aesthetic, her furniture designs aim to shape and shift the perception of an interior.
I like the idea of a strangely collaged abstraction that allows sculptural shapes to become revisible as experimental interior pieces.
When an object or space is allowed to undergo physical transformation, it can become a self-contained act, pursuing or performing a different image of itself.
I believe that we live in a complex world that is shaped in various figures and layers. My approach to dealing with things is to play, to show lightness and beauty in an explorative way, rather than to show the problematic aspects of society. I create varying spatial design proposals and explore new perspectives on functionality and aesthetics.
